Week 25 Summary (09/25/1967 - 09/31/1967)

Week Twenty-Five of the 1967 BBW Replay, the final week of the regular season, is in the books, and the excitement of this replay went down to the final day of the season. To back up,  the AL World Series team will be the Boston Red Sox. They clinched the Al Pennant Wednesday last week, so they and the rest of the AL have just been playing out the remaining games. The NL was a lot more interesting:

St. Louis was to finish with three games in Atlanta. St. Louis won game one on Friday to draw within 0.5 games of first place:

  1. If either one of these two teams were to win both of the final two games, that team would be in the World Series as the NL Pennant winner.
  2. If they were to split ... this is where it gets complicated ... If they split, St. Louis would finish 0.5 games out of first, but they would have played one less game. That game, in Chicago, will be played on Monday if necessary. After that game, if a pennant winner is still not decided, the Atlanta and St. Louis teams will be tied, and a three-game play-off will be necessary.
  3. Assuming a tie, the play-off will begin on Tuesday in St. Louis. So, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday (if necessary), Friday is designated as a travel day, and World Series play would begin on Saturday.

The owners of Atlanta and St. Louis were invited to a local Best Western, the one over on Fabyan Parkway, to sit down with me and talk through the possible scenarios. Then, following several coin tosses, the scenario described above was finalized, and a release was sent to the press.

To end the regular season, on Saturday the Cardinals won again and took over first place with a 0.5-game lead. On Sunday, Atlanta took a 3-0 lead into the ninth, only to see the Cardinals storm back with three runs in the top of the ninth to tie the game at 3-3 and send the game into extra innings.

St. Louis wasted no time as Curt Flood led off the top of the tenth with a double, and one batter later, Orlando Cepeda delivered an RBI single and the Cardinals had their first lead of the day. Ron Willis came in out of the bullpen and threw a 1-2-3 bottom of the inning for the save (8), the win, and the NL Pennant.

World Series play will commence on Wednesday in Boston. Both teams welcome the two off-days first though, and both will have a brief workout Tuesday in Fenway Park. However, World Series play will be held up until after I 1) complete an expansive leaders post and 2) do a team-by-team review of each team, so there will be a World Series, but it just won’t be for a few weeks yet.

There will be a World Series post as well, but that will really wrap up 1967. Following that, APBA BBW 6.0 will be loaded, 1938 will be loaded, and we will begin again … set-up for a new replay usually takes three months or so, so play may not begin until the end of 2024.
