Week 20 Summary (08/21/1967 - 08/27/1967)

Week Twenty of the 1967 BBW Replay is in the books, and the pennant races in both leagues continue to grow closer. This past week featured a total of seventeen doubleheaders as we have reached that part of the season where teams will be making their final road trip to certain locations, so they really need to squeeze in any makeup games they have remaining.

And the doubleheader madness will continue next week as well, including the Cubs hosting the Mets for three consecutive doubleheaders to end the week. The replay will move into September in the middle of this coming week, and all teams will reach and surpass the 130 games played mark

In the AL, this past week ended with Boston going to Chicago for a doubleheader on Friday (which included one ten-inning game), followed by a twenty-inning 1-0 game on Saturday, and then another doubleheader on Sunday, of which the White Sox won the final four of those five games. Boston still maintains a solid 4.0 games led over second-place Baltimore with Detroit trailing Baltimore by 1.5 games. These two have been working hard but were unable to make up any of the distance between themselves and Boston, but a small glint of sunlight has appeared on their horizon.

Atlanta has doggedly remained in the NL pennant race, refusing to let St. Louis run away with it. This week it was the Cardinals' turn to blink and they ended the week by losing three games in a row in Los Angeles, all while Atlanta was pounding Houston. This allowed Atlanta to end the week in first-place NL, even if only by a few percentage points. The Reds got a few players back from long-term injuries and immediately went on a surge and now find themselves in third place, only 2.5 games behind Atlanta. The Giants, who had risen to second place (for a day) earlier in August, now find themselves tied for sixth place with Chicago, both teams 1.0 games behind Philadelphia, with Philadelphia 0.5 games behind fourth-place Los Angeles. The Phillies will be without Dick Allen for the remainder of the season and the Giants will be missing Juan Marichal, bad news for both teams.

We saw another three-homerun game this past week, as Philadelphia center fielder Don Lock did the honors. Other three-run homerun hitters so far this season: Rocky Colavito, Harmon, Killebrew, Jerry Buchek, Tony Conigliaro, and Eddie Mathews.
