Week 9 Summary (06/05/1967 - 06/11/1967)

Week Nine of the 1967 BBW Replay is in the books, and 9it was another exciting and busy week. Tuesday had fifteen games with five doubleheaders and Sunday topped that with seventeen games played with seven doubleheaders. Every team has now passed the fifty games-played-mark, and several will be reaching the sixth mark for this upcoming week.

In the AL, Boston, and Detroit are still fighting it out for the top spot, with neither willing to bend the knee to the other. What these two have done is to put some space between themselves and the next group. Baltimore is currently in third place, but their bandaged-up pitching staff may not hold, while Chicago, in fourth place, is still hoping their offensive attack could actually be a little more offensively oriented. Minnesota is still hoping to climb into the pennant race and this past week they replaced manager Sam Mele with Cal Ermer. Ermer's goal should probably be to get Bobby Allison going - Allison actually hit twenty-four homeruns in 1967 but is currently sitting on one homerun through the first fifty-four games of their replay season.

In the NL, Atlanta is still sitting atop the standings, but it is a precarious situation. There are seven teams behind that all feel they have a chance to grab the NL pennant. Los Angeles (27-28) is in eighth place, but it is only 6.5 games behind Atlanta. The hottest team in the NL is Cincinnati. The Reds just had their fourteen-game winning streak broken, but then they came right back and won their last three games of the week and are currently sitting in fourth place, 4.5 games out of first. Furthermore, most of their hot streak has occurred while Tommy Harper has been out of the lineup with a broken wrist.

The 1967 replay continues to be a great choice. A lot of shutouts, a lot of extra-inning games (the Yankees beat the Senators in an eighteen-inning battle this past week), and then, when you least expect, an offensive explosion will occur. I really never know what I am going to get, which, frankly, is the way it should be. I know I have several key injuries coming up, plus I think some teams are getting ready to make a major move, several others will crumble, and after nine more weeks are completed both pennant races will look quite different - or not. Let's go play!
